Surreal Botany (Year 2)

Brief: To study and analyze the given plant and represent it through the use of diagrams and conceptual model.

Given Plant: Selak

Colours: The colours in the diagram are arrange from top to bottom. The 2 greens at the top illustrate the leaves. Yellow which occurs from top to bottom of the diagram to illustrate the stem. The red at the bottom illustrate the fallen fruits and brown the stems.

Extremities: Leaves and roots are being represented for the extremities. The leaves of salak is smooth hence it is being represented with smooth hollow boxes in the model. The roots are being represented using rough exposed strips in the model. They interlocks with one another to show the complex interweaving of the roots.

Growth: The model of growth is represented through the use of density to illustrate that the plant gets firmer and stronger as it grows. Porous boxes at the bottom are used to represent the seeds while hollow boxes are used to represent the shoots and seedlings. Solid boxed are used to represent the trees. the exposed surface boxes at the top represents the old tree as the leaf would dried and withered.

Habitat: The habitats of Salak are ants and spider which lives in the base of the trees where dead and dried leaves are found. Solid and hollow boxes are used to represent fresh and withered leaves. The habitats are represented with exposed surface boxes. The model is made by layering all the various types of boxes to illustrate the overlapping of leaves over the habitats.

Junction: The diagram illustrates the junctions of the steams and veins of the leaves. Both junctions of the plants have thorns along it. The model is made with strips of different sizes join together at different junction to show that stems are growing at different direction. Each stems are made using exposed surface to illustrate the thorns along the junctions.

Movement: Solid boxes are used to illustrate the leaves and thin exposed strips are used to illustrate the swaying movement of the leaves. A portion of the based is left exposed to represent the sun. This is to illustrate that it is growing towards sunlight.

Replication: Bird is the main replication of Salak as it helps to disperse the seeds. There for it is being represented with a big solid box. The stems of the trees are made with long sticks while the fallen and dried leaves are made of short sticks. Various small rough strips are use to represent the fruits.

Texture: Texture of the leaf, stem, section of stem and fruits are being shown in the diagram. In the model, leaf is represented with smooth planes, stem in smooth strips, section of stem with rough exposed strips and fruits with exposed surface.
